Lancashire Choir of the Year Competition 2022 Launches

The search is on to find Lancashire's top choral singing talent as part of an exciting new competition, which launched on Wednesday 18 May.

Lancashire Choir of the Year 2022 aims to encourage a wide range of choirs from communities, workplaces and schools to come together to showcase their love of singing.

Overseen by Lancashire County Council, the competition, which is open to people from Lancashire, Blackpool and Blackburn with Darwen, will see choristers put their skills to the test recording their performances on video in a bid to reach the finals.

People of all abilities from budding baritones to soaring sopranos are welcome to take part. Schools can enter choirs including pupils aged 12 and above, and non-school based choirs can include people of all ages.

Entry Information:

Please read the Terms and Conditions carefully before entering.

Entry is free and open to any community choir based within the postcode boundaries of Lancashire County Council, Blackburn with Darwen Council and Blackpool Council.

Entry is open to school choirs whose members are all aged 12 and over.

All video entries must be received by 11:59pm on Sunday 31 July 2022.

  • Six shortlisted choirs will be invited to perform at the celebration concert on 24 November at Charter Theatre, Preston.
  • A panel will judge the videos and pick the winners, who will go through to the finals to be held on 24 November 2022 at Preston Guild Charter Theatre.
  • The finals have been timed to take place just before Lancashire Day (27 November).

County Councillor Peter Buckley, cabinet member for community and cultural services, said: "Lancashire boasts many choirs, vocal ensembles and operatic societies and this is a great opportunity to celebrate the joy of singing right across the county.

"Singing is a great way of bringing people of all ages from different communities and backgrounds together.

"It doesn't matter whether you're new to singing or an experienced group of choristers, or what style of music you perform.

"If you are based in Lancashire, Blackpool or Blackburn with Darwen, we'd love to hear from you."

The competition will culminate in live performances from the finalists and the panel will announce the overall winner, as well as category winners and a 'People's Choice' award.

Steve Lloyd, head of cultural services for Lancashire County Council, said: "This fantastic competition is now open and we'd love to have a range of choirs taking part.

"It will be exciting to meet new people and listen to the ensembles along the way to the finals. Our panel will be made up of experienced singers and musicians and there will be a chance to win a range of prizes.

"It's the fun of taking part that matters most and anyone interested in entering should visit our website to find out more."
