Mercury Arts

Contemporary ceramics and ceramic jewellery inspired by the natural world

Featured Work

I make my own moulds and use slip casting techniques to create forms or sheets of clay that I can then shape and manipulate to create individual artworks. My love of the natural world is often represented through abstracted patterns which are meticulously hand carved, painted or incised onto/into the basic form I'm working with. Some of my work is further enhanced through the use of glaze or other surface finishes, some pieces are fired 'naked' to maintain the earthiness of the material. The exploration of light and shadow is key to many of my ideas.

My character artworks maintain the stylized forms that are common throughout my practice but make more of the colour palettes available to me. They allow me to explore both imagined and real elements of the natural world that are not available on my doorstep. I don't want to be sketching lions from the armchair and I'm pretty sure there aren't any Bumblebears at the bottom of my garden!
