ICE Public Event - In Conversation about ‘Mary Reid Kelley and Patrick Kelley: We Are Ghosts’

Institute for Creative Enterprise (ICE) - Edge Hill University

Time & Date: 6.30-8pm, Wednesday 31st January

The artists create video works that fuse classical drama, modern literature and contemporary pop culture into surreal observations on gender, class, and urban development, drawing on cultural references from southern church socials, women’s magazines to Borges and Baudelaire and, in an effort to pull women from the margins of historical records, Mary Reid Kelley’s work often centres around female protagonists such as nurses, prostitutes, and factory workers.

The new video, In The Body of The Sturgeon, is co-produced with The Baltimore Museum of Art and The Center for Advanced Media Studies at the Johns Hopkins University.

Mary Reid Kelley and Patrick Kelley has been programmed in parallel at Tate Liverpool with two other exhibitions : John Piper, and Surrealism in Egypt: Art et Liberté 1938–1948.

As the University enjoys a partnership with Tate Liverpool, EHU students and staff gain free admission to Tate exhibitions, whether in Liverpool, London (Tate Modern and Tate Britain) or St Ives.

Mary Reid Kelly & Patrick Kelley: We Are Ghosts: 17 Nov – 18 March 2018

‘We Are Ghosts’ is a new and imaginative commission which re-imagines life on a US Navy Submarine at the end of the Second World War. Known for their stylised black-and-white videos, this exhibition features their new work In The Body of The Sturgeon, as well as the 2016 work, This Is Offal.

Known for their stylised black-and-white videos this exhibition will be Mary Reid Kelley and Patrick Kelley’s first museum solo exhibition in the UK. The display will feature their new work In The Body of The Sturgeon, as well as the 2016 work, This Is Offal alongside life-size lightbox portraits of the videos’ characters.

Mary Reid Kelley and Patrick Kelley work in collaboration to create video works that combine painting, performance and poetry to tell surreal stories inspired by history and mythology. Played by the artists acting multiple roles, their characters speak in poetic verse filled with wordplay and puns to tell stories that imagine unrecorded histories.

The new commission In The Body of The Sturgeon envisions a peculiar time and space: an American submarine at the very end of the Second World War. Sailors on the (fictional) USS Sturgeon grapple with claustrophobic boredom and entertain each other with ad-hoc burlesque performances.
