You Gotham Be Kidding Me - Red Bull Soapbox Race

A team from East Lancashire will be putting their design to the test against competitors from across the world at an event this weekend.

Staff at East lancashire based Cardboard Box Company have put together a team to design and compete in the world famous Red Bull Soapbox Race taking place at Alexander Palace in London on Sunday 12th July.

Red Bull Soapbox Race is an international event in which amateur drivers race homemade soapbox vehicles. Each hand-made machine is fuelled by nothing but sheer courage and the force of gravity. This unique, non-motorised racing event challenges both experienced racers and amateurs alike to design and build outrageous soapbox dream machines and compete against the clock in a downhill race.

Red Bull has held more than 100 soapbox races around the world since the first one in Brussels in the year 2000 – from Australia to South Africa, Helsinki to St. Louis, Jamaica to Italy. Over the years, vehicles have ranged from realistic replicas to anything the imagination can conjure up. Previous designs have included a piano, a giant baby carriage, a rodeo clown, a massive corn on the cob, a jail cell and the Golden Gate Bridge.

For the vehicle design the creative team at Cardboard Box Company chose to make a replica Lego Batmobile, using LEGO 6864 (Batmobile and the Two-Face Chase), as the inspiration.

"We picked Batman as I have always loved the character and who doesn’t like lego! Last years animated success Lego Movie also helped our decision. I design packaging for a living at The Cardboard Box Company, so the build is mainly out of corrugated board. The management team allowed full access to the cutting edge facilities at our head office in Accrington, Lancashire for all elements of the design and build. We designed the sections on cad, cut them out and then spray painted them with black gloss - lots of black gloss. There are also a few digitally printed parts incorporated into the design. The costumes are also made out of corrugated board, except for the heads which are a combination of foam and a postal tube. The framework is steel, which I is topped with plywood. We have used bmx wheels, which we are hoping will hold up on race day. I think the brakes have caused us the biggest headaches, hopefully they will be ok on the day"
