Design Commission for Lancashire Book of the Year Award 2015

Lancashire Book of the Year are looking for a designer to give this year's publication a new, fresh look.

Lancashire Book of the Year is a young adult book award run by Lancashire County Council's library service and sponsored by UCLAN.

The award is in its 29th year and is one of the few book awards where young people determine the shortlist and the winning title. The idea behind this award is to engage young people with reading and to celebrate young adult fiction. Previous winners include Phillip Pullman, Anthony Horowitz and Malorie Blackman.

As part of the award process, a review booklet is published every year. This recognises the authors and books that have been involved. Reviews written by the young judges from across the 12 participating schools are included as well as statements from sponsors and an overview from the Chairperson of the judging.

This year Lancashire Book of the Year are looking to commission a designer to put a fresh take on the review booklet. The emphasis being placed on a design and format which is more appealing to the intended audience of 14 year olds. They are looking for a designer to provide us with their vision for how this booklet could look and what new elements they would be able to incorporate to make it more interactive.

Some new ideas that have been discussed already include a "meet the judges" section, a brief overview of the award process and incorporating QR codes, which would link to author's websites and book trailers.

They want the booklet to reflect the spirit of the Lancashire Book of the Year and to highlight that it is a fun, engaging and prestigious scheme to be part of. The completed booklet is the main component of our promotional material for the award.

It is sent out to a range of key people and organisations every year:

  • Publishers
  • Every high school in Lancashire
  • County Councillors
  • Authors on the shortlist
  • Judges
  • UCLAN
  • Every library in Lancashire
  • Copies are also provided to other North West authorities as an example of the type of work we do.
